Born-and-raised San Franciscan Alex Sturmgarten used to be one of the best private investigators in the City, back when the fog still felt romantic and the tech bros were just bros. Then came the case she won’t talk about.

Now, at 33 years old, she runs an indie bookshop in the Richmond, selling tarot decks and polished quartz out of the back room while her rental properties pay the bills. She reads cards for tourists who wander too far from the Ferry Building and bartenders who know better than to ask too many personal questions.
